I've just bought this power supply, can anyone vouch that this is good for my rig with 2 x R9 290's (Overclocked to 1200/1600) and an i7 4790K at 4.8GHz.

Not overkill at all.
While most titles won't pull this kind of wattage, I saw a peak of 1655W (which tripped my SF1200W Plat) at the wall in Sleeping dogs Extreme benchmark during the final stage at similar clocks.
The 1300W Gold seems to give up at around the same point according to LtMatt, who also has one.

my 850 runs custom BIOS 780 lightnings with a 3770k at 4.7 no problems. Not once has OCP stepped in!

Yes my 1300W gold cuts out at around 1650Wish maybe a tad lower. However it is a fair whack cheaper than the 1200W Plat so definitely a good deal.
