Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Started back at my gym after a long 2 years away. I have lost a lot of weight over those years and I am now slightly under weight. I have still got good muscle definition which I haven't lost but I really could do with bulking up.

I need to get some protein from myprotein again but its a maze with all the variety since I last used it 2+ years ago. Can anyone recommend what would be best or ideal for bulking? Would I need quick or slow release protein?

I got some creatine by 'Universal Nutrition' which the guys at the gym have bragged about after they tried numerous brands and they give it a big thumbs up. They have mentioned whey protein 'Real Gains' also by 'Universal Nutrition' but I prefer to get from myprotein which I hope you guys can help me out with from some suggestions.

Cheers.

I'm a lazy git, can anyone recommend some pre mixed shakes which have the best value for money?

Currently I'm drinking Maximuscle Maxi Milk, I get 8 x 330ml bottles for just under £10 - is there anything better value for money in the pre mixed stuff?

Has anyone come across any problems while loading on Creatine Monohydrate. Respiratory problems? Difficutly breathing etc?

No, never even heard of this.

Is this something that has happened before? If not, could just be coincidence.

Get it checked out at the docs Kai. I don't think it's related to creatine, perhaps it's the strict diet?

I get quite wheezy at night if I take Mono, not difficult to breath but my breathing is louder, and it always happened when taking Monohydrate

Since stopping taking it, it's gone away

Just did a search (web and pubmed), looks like there is something to it. Lots of anecdotal claims on message forums about people having issues. A handful of mice studies show that creatine supplementation worsens asthma.

Looks like if you already have a mild underlying allergic/autoimmune issue, the creatine can worsen it. I don't think it's respiratory disease in general, as some of trialled creatine use in COPD patients as a possible treatment.

Maybe try another type of creatine (not necessarily brand, but type). Often people have digestive issues with the basic whey powder, but can use some other form of protein powder. Probably more expensive, and may not be worth it.

I'm worried by this slightly myself. I used to take creatine regularly, but never had an issue with it and have never had asthma. I've actually recently developed asthma as an adult and have to frequently use an inhaler. But I developed it after I stopped using using creatine. I was planning on using creatine again in a few weeks when I start training again. I hope it doesn't exacerbate my symptoms. Hmm.

I actually went into anaphylactic shock Sunday night; hospital job the lot with a shot of adrenaline; doctors put it down some cream i was using; but im not convinced as i had problems late last night again!

only thing i can think that has changed is im using PhD Creatine (not something i use, but i won in facebook comp on PhD page), but seems a little odd as i use Synegy "all in one" for a long period of time and i believe that would use the same creatine - surely?
