Hi guys.

After a bit of advice from people with experience. I've upgrade to a new GPU and that leaves me with a GTX 770 unused. I would gladly stick it into my GFs PC, but the issue I've got is the supply she's running. She has a 520W Antec 520 High Current gamer that served her well for the last few years.

Nvidia advise to use 600W supply and I appreciate that they probably have the poor quality units in mind, but 520 with a few years of wear may be a bit on the weak side, won't it? The GPU will not be overclocked any more than the factory overclock, the CPU she's running is Intel 8400 with no overclock. The GPU would not be taxed heavily as she does not play anything else besides WoW these days.

So in your opinion, can I safely run 770 GTX of that PSU or shall I look for an alternative solution?

Thanks for any input.

From my experience and guesstimations I'd suggest that you'd be fine.

Had a search around to confirm, found several reports of people doing full system power draw readings with hungrier CPU's and running more graphically demanding games (first person shooters mostly) and they were topping out at around 405 watts, this is of course power draw from the wall, so worst case scenario as your components will actually be using less, because IIRC PSU's are rated at what they can potentially supply to the PC, not what they draw from the wall.

So I'd say go for it.

You will fine running the GPU with the Antec PSU.

You be lucky to pull 330w from the mains.

Great, thanks for that, Mustang.

My limited knowledge pointed that way as well, but I am always a bit apprehensive when it comes to PSUs as I've had more than a fair share of them die on me (fortunately without any serious consequences). However, they were all poorer quality. Now I don't even look at unbranded or poorly rated PSU.

Any more opinions before I take the plunge?

Good to hear. What about the wear on the PSU itself? Is it worth considering in this case?

Thanks

EDIT: Read your edit - in that case it's doubtful that her usage degraded the unit as much. No overclocks and barely heating up the components unlikely made the unit lose 200W, hehe.

EDIT2: I've tried on of those online tools for counting the full system power draw and most of them say I won't see more than 400W draw.

Yeah 520 will be plenty for that like the lads say, does your Mrs game too? That's ace.

Thanks for that XfXGamer2014.

Yeah she does. Not as much as I do, but we've been know to play things like Portal co-op together, or Magicka co-op. Back in the day when half of my life consisted of WoW those were the only times we met :D
