system:
i7 950, 6 gig triple channel, UD3r rev2 gigabyte mobo, Sapphire ATI 5850 bought november 2009

After installing windows 7 and the latest ATI catalyst drivers, when windows starts up, the fan speed on the graphics card suddenly jumps to 100% (3500rpm or something mental when i use gpuz software). Its proper loud, and not right.

I found i have to go into ATI Overdrive (which is all greyed out) and click on the 'defaults' button and apply, and fan speed suddenly returns to normal. I have to do this every time the computer starts and windows starts.

I did some research - it turns out there were issues with these early sapphire 5850 cards, and people have got around it by installing a new bios or something, which I've never done before. The issue seems to be linked with running 2 screens as well. But ultimately there is a problem with the card. Gaming is fine but when i start or stop a video, either in the browser, or in chrome, any form of video, the screen will 'jump' and 'flicker' with black lines, momentarily.

Sent it to overclockers, they tested it and found no issue (even tho there is). So i've lost 30 quid in the process altogether. Now what do i do?

overclockers are saying they ran all the benchmark tests possible (i bet none of them included testing with 2 screens though). this was never a benchmarking issue though, and I made it clear in the webnotes I sent to them before sending the card.

has anyone else had similar issues with their 5850's bought in 2009? with sapphire?

Is it a reference card? I guess it is from the date. You can create a DOS bootable pendrive, copy the bios you wish to flash it with, boot the machine and run the flash utility, clench buttocks and then relax when it all works out or die inside if it doesn't :D

I flashed my reference (OEM, unbranded ATI) 5850 with the MSI bios, just for giggles and it went fine. I'll look for a link for you, though confidence with DOS is required

Edit:

Bear in mind this will probably well and truely void any warranty you have but as you say you've returned it already with no luck, may be worth it. I take absolutly no responsiblity for your actions :)
