Supporting PCIe expansion cards with backplate removed, possible?

Im putting together a small home server around an atom mini-itx board. Im using a case which does not have holes in the rear for expansion cards to poke out the back.

I want to install a sata controller in a PCIe x16 slot because there aren’t enough onboard sata ports.

If I get a controller card with only internal ports (like this ), do you think it would be OK to remove the back plate and just leave the circuit board plugged in to the board without support?

Are there any retail products designed to keep cards in the slots with the back plate removed?

Thanks

It should be absolutely fine - it's such a small card anyway, and the SATA cables should help it keep in place.

Hi Marvin, thanks for the reply

Im hoping to use a 4 port PCIe sata controller, but havent yet found one without external ports (with external ports it wont fit in the case)

So the circuit board would be probably at least twice the size of the one I linked. If I can find one :)

Do you still think it would be OK? I was thinking of using blu-tack or that heat gun glue stuff, but thought there might be some kind of retaining kit thing for this kind of setup?
