Howdy,
I have been playing SupCom for a fair while now but recently built a new rig and now SupCom (not FA) will not get past the 2gb mark when running. My specs are:
Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz
4GB OCZ Reaper X @ 1066mhz
ATI X2900XT @ Stock
Vista 64 Ultimate
2 x LG L226WTQ 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor (running in dual monitor mode)

As topic states, I have tried the 3GB enabler and have verified that it has added the string necessary. I know Vista 64bit should not need this but without the hack I cannot even launch the game.

I have tried to run the rig at stock but still get the same errors. I have a Thermalright Ultra-120 on the cpu so it only reaches 55 degrees on load. SupCom is the only game I have which does this so you can imagine the frustration I endure. Also, I have downloaded all the hotfixes for vista but have not yet installed SP1. Any help would be much appreciated. I can provide a dx diag log if wanted.

Been talking to Second Line at work and apparently this game throws a hissy fit over page file sizes :S Will try disabling page file when I get home.

It will never, ever get past the 2GB mark.

PAE, 3GB , 64 bit , none of it matters, because the program itself is 32 bit. Am I wrong? I didn't think SupCom allowed any of those.

Odd. I used to have crashing problems on my old XP rig and the 3Gb enabler worked a treat.

Since moving to Vista I also installed Forged Alliance (this has the 3Gb string in the .exe on vanilla) on a new rig (sig below). I only had it crash once, and that was due to it hitting 2Gb. Upping the page file seemed to help it for me.

FA does seem to be more stable than Supcom under Vista, although I cannot say why, for me anyway. I can now easily run large map games, good eye candy and big unit caps without crashing. Given you can pick FA up pretty cheaply (and makes the game much better IMO when used with Sorians AI's) I'd give FA a whirl and see if that improves matters.

Sorry can't be of more help but the guy who writes a lot of Supcom/FA fixes (he wrotes the 3Gb enabler) Madboris will be worth a PM on the GPG Forums.

Ninja Edit: also, have you tried to Core Maximiser tool to see if that helps?

I've got sup come to about 3gb.

a 32 bit program can use 4gb ram, if it's programed correctly and has a large address aware header.

If you've set it so 3gb Is available for an application it still wont use it unless you edit it to be large address aware (FA is Supcom isn't)

http://www.musikbanken.se/TechLaaTiDo.aspx

Use that, so you don;t have to hassle with editbin.

Edit: you say you've let it have 3gb ram, but have to done the boot switches so that windows isn't still trying to use it's 2 gb too? as sothwise it's stil lgoing to crash if they want the same space.

Oh and vista Makes a copy of the video cards ram in system ram under the apps's ram space so that eats up a lot if you have a card with large amounts of ram (think a patc scaled the aggressiveness of this back but it would still be an issue)

Gonna give that TechLaaTiDo a go when I get home as well. Hopefully it will sort it :)

don't worry i have the same problem, i have NEVER been able to play supreme commander on vista, however forged alliance plays perfectly fine :)

I got your PM...
*Reaches back deep into memory, oh yeah a 3GB issue... Wink*

If you see the new string in the executable, saying it now supports >2GB and you are positive that the executable resides in the game folder, and your shortcut points to it then with 64 bit you are done.

The only other obvious thing I am aware of that may be causing an issue is make sure you have the Vista address space fix.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105

If you are not sure rerun it and it will either load it or tell you that it can't run which means you may have it.

I'm not running Vista currently, back on the back burner, but I didn't remember that it sets THAT much aside into shared video memory, tons more than XP.

Sorry I can't be much more help, but if you covered your bases on making the exe 3GB capable, patched vista, then I would look elsewhere as to the cause.

P.S. I would also as a test set your page file to a static amount to like 500MB (with all that RAM your good), atleast to rule out the shared memory possibly taking up some address space, which it shouldn't but...

Hope this has helped you Gashman. I havent tried this yet as I was busy last night but will try it tonight.

thank but i have forged alliance installed, supreme commander is installed and i can still use all races in MP so no sweat :)

Sorry but, all this hassle to play a game, people shouldnt have to go through :(.

You are quite right, but its such a beast game :) I think I have re-installed this game about 30 times not to mention re-installed windows twice just to see if it was that :p

After applying the said patches and chaning my pagefile size to 512mb the game crashes after about 5 mins BUT one screen (the map screen) stays open. Nothing is moving mind you, but its still showing the game in its last state before the crash.

Going to install sp1 for vista and see what happens. Although last time I did that SupCom wouldnt work at all.

Installed SP1 and tried both 512 1024 and 2048 mb page file sizes and all time the game crashes and I cant open taskmanager because there are not enough resources :( Gonna try and set it to auto again and see what happens.

Man that's frustrating but as I others have mentioned, try FA. Seems to be far more stable under Vista and you get Supcom and more! Not ideal I know, but at least you can play this legendary game!

quick question you say you've set the game to access > 2gb, but have you used the boot switches, so windows uses <2gb ?

Done a bit of reading...seems as if 64bit vista does not need the boot switch...however as I could not get SupCom to even run without using the 3GB hack I guess it wont hurt to try it.
