Supreme Commander Gold £5

How is the multiplayer? Active community? Good balance? Quite tempted by this.

I can't really help you there, I don't usually play RTS games online, as I prefer to turtle up and build mega bases. And naturally, playing against a human leads to an inevitable T1 unit rush that would flatten me.
I do remember GPGnet, the system for finding multiplayer games, was pretty dire. Especially if you use it to patch the game, since it has to close to apply the patch, then once its patched it logs in to download the next patch, but already thinks you are logged in, you needed to wait about 5 mins for it to realise you're actually logged out before it logs you back in again.

Also, download Sorian AI. Its a gread mod, gives you better AI, which is always worth downloading. More of a challenge than the vanilla.

Balance wise, its pretty good. There's a community balance patch aimed at tweaking some of the largest problems, which should have been patched by the devs, but there you go. The good thing about GPGnet is the vault, which lets you easily download mods and maps, and automatically sticks them all in the right folders.

Its easily worth the £5 just for the singleplayer. Rush through the original just for the plot, but Forged Aliance is better optimised, has more units, a new faction, and has a far better UI.

Really good game, upgraded my pc a few times which needed a new install of windows and this is the first game I install. Great having a blast against AI. Never tried it against a human.

I always found the SupCom games a completely sterile experience devoid of any emotional engagement but even I have to say at that price that's a great deal.

I play SupCom: FA quite a bit online... the community is pretty big.. never short of games to play.

I personally don't play ranked games but they're there if you want, also tournaments are frequently ran.

Bah, if this was on steam, I'd be tempted, but I can't be doing with all the hassle of downloading another client...

I love Steam, but Impulse is far better! For one thing, you download something through Steam, then you need to have Steam running to play it. Not exactly a big deal, except for those rare times you have no internet, and Offline mode doesn't like to play ball.

With Impulse, once you've downloaded the game, you just use the Impulse client to keep it up to date, and that's it. You can launch the game through Impulse, but you can also launch it from the game exe, no starting up Impulse, no web connectivity tests, nothing. Given a choice between buying something on Impulse and on Steam, it would be Impulse every time. But Steam has much more clout, so they often get all the good deals.

Not having to have it running is a nice feature, I think I may give it a try after all. I do like to have all my games in a big list under steam however, so if I did download sup com using Impulse, could I then add sup-com so my steam list using the 'add non steam game' feature?

I don't see why you couldn't!

The few times I have played Sup Com / FA online I've had my ass whooped but it's been an experience - watching the replays of some of the big 8 player advanced games is insane ...

I much prefer playing with mates or sometimes we would get three of us together and play against 3 randoms on say Setuns Clutch!

Do i need to make a impulse account or sign up for this ??

As i no see anywhere to sign up or make an account up...

Edit:I already had an impulse account :o(But I can't remember making one):o

It's been a while, but I'd assume that when you checkout, it will ask you to create an Impulse account. If not, download the client first, and create an account through there. You can buy the game through the client as well, much as you would with Steam.

I'd assume so. For all extents and purposes, Impulse games act in exactly the same way as retail versions which you install. I'd be suprised if the SupCom install through Impulse is any different to the retail version.
