ok I've been playing and loving supreme commander forged alliance since it came out and have changed a lot of hardware since then. ATM I am running the below:

AMD X2 6000
6gb ram
1gb ati 4890

I use core maximizer to assure decent cpu load and it does make a difference, but I still obviously get slowdown. I get slow down on maps that are 20x20 with 3 enemies about 30 mins in to the game.
So I am wondering what would make a difference? Graphical I am assuming wont as it runs same speed as when I had a much worse graphics card.
Ram I have gone down from 8gb and made no difference, never fills up anyway.
So that leaves CPU. How much better is a quad core really? Is a quad core 2ghz going to be better then a dual core 3.2ghz for this game or what? Basically I would lvoe to play the huge 81x81 maps with 8 enemies, running at real time. Can anyone do this on their hardware?

Well oxyclean, I go up against 5cpu players, on large map cant remember the size, then it laggs like hell ;/ and my specs not even no where bad!

Get a quad and make it run at at least 3ghz, it should solve the biggest issue.
After that, using the sorian AI's instead of the default ones helps a lill bit too.
A 3.2 ghz amd x2 is definitely bottlenecking it a lot.

I have an old phemon lying around. reckon a quad at 2.2 quad will run it faster? Also didnt know the sorian was more efficient. Is it noticably faster?

system in spec. if i throw on 2 comps plus me and my mate it will slow down een with core maximiser.

its just allot of information to process. i dont think its a hardware fault just the game.

The default AI takes far to many system resorces, use sorian AI to make skirmishes run quicker.

A fast quad core will make a huge diffrence, but it will still be limited because of the AI.

For online games, assuming you have a nice lag free connection, you should be able to run fine 4v4 even on huge maps (with a quick quad).

Graphics card makes very little diffrence on this game, apart from making it look nicer :p

Well I plugged back in my old quad core and got some weird results. Using core maximizer ofc, it slows down sooner, making it seam like a slower dual core. Checked task manager and all 4 cores are in use, at around 50% so soemthing isnt going right. Right now its running as if my cpu was 2 cores at 2.2ghz but spread the load.

I had this problem when i played SupCom to death. The standard AI after around 30mins either sends tons of experimentals at you or (usually the more likely) they will build hundreds apon hundreds of units (often aircraft) and leave them sat in their base.

This then adds a massive overhead on the processing as they are all active units. If you nuke the area then the game speeds up again!

Like others have suggested you should probably use a modded AI like sorian to stop this from happenning.

What pc does your mate have? The game auto syncs to the speed of the slowest player. If you've got an idiot playing with a pentium 4 or amd 3000+ or so while you got a nice quad, you game will still lag as much as if YOU had a single core cpu. Hence you need to kick people with poor pc's if you want a decent game tbh.

Also, I think you're (also) gpu bottlenecked, drop details to low and retest.
My fps also drop to 20 ish late ingame, but when I move from my base into an open area, the fps shoot up to 50 again. Same with dropping the res, when I play at 1280x720 it's much much smoother than on 1920x1080 later in game.

I don't think so, a 2.2ghz phenom is what? 1.9 ghz c2q ? I think you need a faster cpu than that tbh and that the dual is better. but I'm not 100% sure.

Afaik to get reasonable performance you need at least a 4 ghz ish c2d or a 3+ ghz c2q or a 3ghz phenom II. And to get rid of the gpu lag a good gtx260/hd4870 at least.

But not a 3.2ghz X2? :p Maybe I should look in to overclocking this thing, although apparently they only get like 200mhz more

Nope :p. 4 ghz c2d means you'd need about 4.5 ghz of amd X2 power, and I think that's nearly impossible to get the amd chips to run at.

However, this is of course thinking of absolute lag free gaming.
I expect your mate will prolly lag you even more seeing the game can't even handle 2 ai's... Upgrading yourself won't help if your mate's the bottleneck.
Have you tried lower graphics detail and compared the fps ( / to show fps ingame) ? It should help a lot to play on low-medium.

There's this console command ( I forgot which, but look on gpg forums or ask in gpg lobby) which you can type in and it shows a list of all players, what maximum (game) speed their hardware can reach without lagging and who's the culprit if the game slows down.

Should be some new AMD X2 chips based on phenom2 out soon. Might be an idea to get 1 of those instead (they should easy clock over 4ghz).

whats the core maximiser? As I have Supreme Commander & FA and usually after about 30 to 1hr online it slows down to hell + normal skirmishes with AI have a lot of slow down after a set period of time.

I'm aware of the Sorian AI but not the core maximiser so any info would be great thanks.

My PC Specs are Intel Core 2 6400 @ 2.13Ghz , 4GB ram , XFX HD Radeon 4870 512MB

Yeah you could definately beenfit from it. Core Maximizer is a small program that runs in the background of sup com / forged alliance and balances the load more evenly accross multiple cores. It is meant to work with any number of cores but still helps a lot with dual core.
The gpgnet forum thread for it is Here, and the direct download link, if you are too lazy to read the thread, is here.

Thanks a lot for your help as I didn't know what this was until now so I will give it a test with the Sorian AI mod and see how it performs
