Anyone tried AI war? It looks to have an even larger scale than SC and promises little micromanagement. I haven't yet as I'm waiting for someone to recommend it *prompt*.
Was half price last week, everyone ignored my thread
Essentially, its a cross between Supreme Commander and Sins of a Solar Empire. Tons of planets, you start on one, you have to find and destroy the two AI bases... though you have no idea where these are. The planets are all linked together Sins style, you can only move along pre-defined links. You also build huge armies, really huge.
But you don't want to expand too much, or too quickly. There is an 'AI Progress' meter in the corner. It starts at 10, and with time it slowly increases, but doing things like destroying its buildings make it go up quicker. There are also buildings you can capture on AI worlds that reduce it. The higher the progress level is, the more attacks it will send, and the bigger the attacks are. Its also a co-op game, you can play it solo, or with up to 7 others.
Finally, its being constantly updated, the 4.0 patch just arrived last week (hence the sale), which added 147 new ships, improved the AI, new UI and interface... essentially made it better, for free. It also has 2 expansions, both of which are £3, and the profits of one (Childeren of Neinzul) all go to Childs Play. There's also a new expansion that's just been announced as well, though no real details.
Easiest thing to do would be to check out the demo:

The tutorial in it is massive, several hours of gameplay as it essentially walks you through the beginnings of a game before leaving you to finish it for yourself. A game on the default sized map (~180 planets) will take around 10 hours, depending on how you play, AI difficulty and so on. Its an awesome game, though, I deffinately recommend checking it out.
