A friend wants to run Supreme COmmander...

What type of GPU should he be looking at?

At the moment he has my oldddd system of a barton @3200 speeds, 512MB of ram and a MX4.

I was mentioning maybe getting something like my system (a cheap conroe and overclock, a P5N-E or similar motherboard) and get 1GB of ram.

I dont think the barton will be ok for the game at all really. He is not a graphics nut, so will probably be happy @ 1280x1024 with medium details really.

Supreme commander is a cpu intensive game.
A core 2 duo i'd say minimum and a 7600gt minimum.
2 gig ram minimum.
All about the cpu with supreme commander.

i have e6600, 2gb pc6400 ram, 8800 GTX and raid0 7200.10 drives and when large armies are on screen doing lots it does slow down. Ok so im not overclocking yet and i have the details up to high for everything but still, this is a pretty resource intensive game. The slowdown isnt too bad btw its still very much playable

He wants a really cheap system though :D

As I said, he doesn't mind turning down the details to a mix of mediums and highs with no AA, and is only running a 17" monitor.

My mistake, I forgot to post that earlier cause I was eatting

He does already have hard drives, DVD roms and everything else. So was just thinking a really nice cheap system for him.

SupCom beats on your CPU slightly more than the GPU but both are still intensivly used. dropping a C2D and 2gb of ram in and then a 7600 sounds like a false economy to me. my old 7800GTX would get 23fps with medium details. the 7600GT is a much slower card.

Def get a Core2 setup with 2Gb RAM.

After that a 8800GTS would be ideal.

I recently bought a E6400/Asus P5N-E/2Gb GeIL/8800GTS 640mb and this came to around £600. You can get away with a 320mb card, get a E6300, cheaper ram,and maybe shave £100 off that, id say thats quite cheap.
