i have noticed that if virgin medias net restrictions are in place, it makes it impossible for me to play supreme commander!! i have no idea why as supcom does not use tons of bandwidth but during the period of limitation when my 4.5mb cable line is limited to a sucky 1mb i am unable to play online without getting these intermittant lag spikes of some 1600ms! i mean just what the **** are they doing ?

now i know some of you are going to chime in with "well dont download during peak hours" unfortunatly im at work during peak hours and the other half uses the net quite often to play WoW which also likes to update itself with several hundred mb on a regular basis with no real notification. plus there are other things we run here that update often too so its quite easy for me to go over my limit without even touching the pc.

its very annoying and i dont know how to get around it :(

I dont think its the slower internet that is going to limit it, Sounds like theres some other problem. I used to play it fine on 1mb connection - dont forget your uploadis only 380-something /s. does it happen on every online game?

DMZ is active, no firewalls, routers fine, games perfect when connections not restricted. all other games are fine. just supcom and only during restricted periods.

will have to look into that. its just bizare though. the 1mb is fine for everything but it causes an issue with supcom and theres just no reason for it that i can see. a possibillity is that as well as the limiting the bandwidth, they may limit the type of usage ?? Supreme commanders connection system is based on the bit torrent system, its about the only game i know that is but its a very stable system to use (and quite forward thinking if you ask me)

TBH I can't see Virgins bandwidth throttling effecting your ping, in the good old days on 56K we still used to get pretty good pings.

how else can it be explained ? it has to be them... it only happens when my connections under restriction and only to supreme commander. when not restricted its perfect. its not a lack of bandwidth im suffering from its the response times of the packets sent and recieved that are the problem it seems.

I have Virgin 2mb broadband & always get restricted as I download lots but it never seems to effect my online gaming, was playing CS:S last night with a ping of 10

as i said above, all other games are fine. Supcom uses a unique connection system that no other multiplayer game uses as of yet based around the torrent system.

Well, isn't it obvious what type of traffic is shaped, as well as your BW being throttled?

This is the point right here. If you are being shoved on a "pipe" with high useage, then odds are your pings will skyrocket.

the confusion is that they supposedly dont use traffic shapping, just limiting.

Can't see why they wouldn't, its the most efficient way of removing "problematic" users from the more "adequate" pipes at peak times.

Sounds like typical side effect of ellacoyas - when p2p is considered low priority, anything that looks like p2p suffers from ping yoyoing as it's throttled against prioritized "regular"traffic from other users...

Go to speedtest.net and run the test. You need an upload rate of at least 250 kb/s to play larger Sup Com games smoothly.

MY mate, 'West' on these forums, has the same problem as you. Virgin have decided that he no longer needs more than 25kb/s and he can't play any online games anymore due to having massive lag.

Phone virgin up and tell them that unless he gets his service back he is going to cancel.

Although if he has been downloading loads then fair play on them :p

I have 8MB+ ADSL. 12am-4pm I get close to max speed. 4pm-12pm they start 'traffic managment' at which point I get all sorts of trouble. I can't use vent at all as its packets are low priority, so I have switched to TS. Cod4 and CoH get ping spikes. IMO they are prioritizing packets, with p2p at the bottom of the pile. It addition to this IMO they are throttleing bandwidth.

Some BAMS are worse than others for ping and bandwidth, so I am sure it is not my profile that is being targeted. I can switch BAMS through my router, but the reconnection is totally random. Sometimes it can take 20-30 mins to find a 'playable' BAM. Even then during peak time (4pm-12pm) bandwidth will rarely top 1MB.
