surface 2 printer issues.

My friend purchased a surface 2 and has a hp 1020 laser jet printer,he's just found out the printer is not compatible with the surface 2.

As i recommended the tablet i feel like a real noob as his printer wont work,is there a way around this as i thought a windows based laptop/tablet/pc are all the same.

He's not happy and i said i would have a look around as hes not pc savvy.

It's Windows RT, not full Windows, so printing may be restricted to certain apps.

I see that earlier on but my friend phoned microsoft and they said its not compatible.

A printer that age would usually have the drivers included, or accessible via Windows Update.

Windows RT isn't the same as (full) Windows 8.1. Unfortunately you just found this out...

The HP 1020 is a host-based printer, so offloads a bunch of tasks to whatever machine is printing to it. Horrible things.

Most of the personal printers are nowadays. At work I find it's a struggle to find personal printers with hardware PCL for the homeworkers.
