Might be being given one for free at work.

My question is, having never used this device before, is it in all senses of the word basically a regular PC in a different form factor?

Can I install regular windows software on it etc?

I was going to buy my sisters old laptop to use to study but if I can use the Surface then I'll save my self a few quid!! ;)

Oh and can you plug a mouse in to it?

It's basically a laptop in a tablet form factor and it does run full x86 Windows so yes, you can install regualr Windows app on it.

It has a USB port so yes, you can plug a mouse into it.

They are practically impossible to repair or upgrade, stuck together with a load of glue :)

I have a Surface Pro 3, I love using it instead of a laptop.

Regular windows 8.1 or 10; along with any other software which runs on windows.

Hmm not so good on the upgradability pov.

I was hoping to use this machine for study, which will include running VM's etc...

I don't have the surface yet, but I understand it will have an i5 cpu and 4Gb of ram. So cutting it a little bit thin on the ram.

My sister has a laptop she doesn't want. It's got a 1.4Ghz i3 inside with 4 Gb of ram. I could upgrade the ram to 8Gb and add an SSD which will be a nice bump.

Will the i3 struggle with VM's? Not talking many, maybe 2 on top of the host OS.

I have one i5 8gb ram, tried using it as laptop replacement but I am in software testing, running VMs on it but it got really hot and slow.

It is a laptop replacement for people who use Web / office and other standard apps but anymore and it doesn't cut it.

I'm using mine with vm workstation and it does ok. As always it depends what you run.

Even got rocket league and a bit of dota 2 out of it.
