Hello. In need of some help. I've tried to provide as much info as I can.

My Dad has a Surface Pro 3 (currently Windows 10) and on doing the latest automatic Windows update (3/4 Dec) it seems to 'corrupt' the machine somehow.

The update was first done last week and on restart Windows took a long time to login and then wouldn't function correctly. Start Menu wouldn't open, Task Manager doesn't open. There is no Troublshoot function, you can't even right-click on files at the system hangs.

Tried several things - going into safe mode didn't help, getting administrator access using the 'hidden' administrator account also didn't help.

In the end we copied all the data off that was needed and did a factory restore using the built in image/recover.

This worked fine, until it did the automatic update today (11 Dec) and restated at which point the same thing happened on restart. This makes me think it is a Windows 10 update problem rather than any other software.

I've done three system resets today now to get it working, and had to disable the Windows Update service from service.msc so that it won't do the updates.

  • Has anyone encountered a problem like this?
  • Anything else we can do to disagnose it to pinpoint the specifics?
  • I'm trying to search online for problems related to Windows update on Surface Pro 3s but I feel like I could be searching forever.
  • It would be good to know when it is safe to turn the Windows Update back on, or if there is a better way to fix this issue.

I was told about this Microsoft help that can hide updates so Windows Update will 'ignore' them which has meant I can turn back on the Windows Update Service and allow other updates/Store to function while supressing the problematic updates.

Very useful: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3073930

I also got a screenshot of the updates that seemed to be causing the problem so it will allow some more trouble shooting, these were all hidden just in case although I expect it is the Win10 update causing the issue.
