Would you be happy if your partners purchased you a new case as a surprise or is this something that actually you would prefer to be your own choice?

I want to get my partner a new case his current one is the type that looks like it will last forever and it weighs a ton! http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cases/2007/10/02/hiper_anubis/1
It has a heatsink-like set of ridges on the roof.....they just fill with dust and the hoover or blower doesnt get it out! The panels on either side now rattle when the pc is on it drives everyone insane and the door on the front no longer shuts and the ports on the top are hit and miss.

He sat and complained about it so I though it might be a good idea!

I have a newer pc a customised cooler master case which I love and was thinking along the same lines. I am on a budget but I honestly do not think he would spend more than what I would spend which would be up to around £150 though not sure he would spend more than £100 as he is more concerned about what he can spend on the inside. I am going to try bare in mind that he may wish to upgrade the components inside it at a later date so would think of the future too. Any recommendations?

TIA

That's a difficult one because cases can be very subjective. You just need to look at any thread of a new case announcement and you'll see 'love it!' And 'hate it' everywhere. Why not consider some OCUK Vouchers and let him choose his own?

Its a good idea/nice thought bit me personally would like to choose my own. Above post about vouchers is a good call. I would love getting a surprise of OCUK vouchers. :)

You are both probably right it probably needs to be his decision. I don't think he picked the computer case he has now he had it built and I think that was the case available with that build at the time. He might of regretted he couldn't choose his own will have to drop that into conversation and find out!

I wanted to actually buy him a gift thats whats so fustrating he's already having vouchers for a commuting bike from everyone else so it will all be vouchers.

But I guess it's what he buys with them vouchers that counts!

The vouchers everyone else gets him will be HMV or Game probably. OCUK Vouchers will be something different. The other option is be sneaky. Tell him you'd like a new case and ask him to look through some with you and ask him if he likes this one or that one.

I'd go with OcUK voucher too so you can have fun looking and choosing together (one he likes and that you're also happy with). You wouldn't want him to be disappointed, because of lack of drive space and/or a bunch of other considerations. So voucher means he's getting a new case (nice surprise), and can then also take part in choosing it (bonus).

It is always nice to receive something physical instead of a voucher. Hell, I would take any case instead of my expected underwear and socks. Perhaps take MissChief's approach and ask for his assistance on "something for you".

I vote for trying to figure out sneakily what case he likes, but you'd have to pretty sure. Vouchers would be safer, but I'd at least try the other option first... if nothing else that way you can't later be accused of being lazy by getting vouchers lol! ;)
