Surround headset?

Now that the Earforce x41 is around for £80 I was thinking of indulging... Are they all that?

I bought one and played Battlefield Vietnam last night with it on, I don't think it was the best game to try because of the constant explosions going off and gunfire but I found it difficult to pinpoint people.

It was very immersive though.

Depends what you're after. I think that with a decent set of stereo headphones and virtual surround, it's actually pretty darn good. You'll need a decent-ish sound card for that but I hear that in general, audiophiles prefer stereo + virtual surround to surround headphones.

As for wireless, beats me. I just bought a long 3.5mm extension cable.

EDIT: Sorry ignore me, this is the console section, I thought it was the PC one!

If you're going for a surround sound headset you can't go wrong with Astro A40's. They're what all the machinima folk use and I think they are the best ones to get currently. Available in a few different colour combinations too, although costing a hefty price of £195.

They're actually only £70 if you pick them up btw.
Even better :D

Hope the deals stay out until payday, I'm pretty sure I'll give them a go because I want to grab a headset anyway.

Definitely not going to spend £195 on some though :p

Your best bet is a set of decent stereo headphones, a clip on mic and an astro mixamp

Check out the thread by Mad Lust Envy over at head-fi, IMO most of these surround headsets are gimmicky, why trust someone who has been making headphones for 2 years over someone like sennheiser or beyer that has been making them for 20!

I have a Turtle Beach DSS which I'm using with an old set of Sony headphones. I gather the surround emulation isn't as good as the astro mixamp, but it only cost £65 and it seems pretty good to me. Quite handy being able to use an existing set of headphones.

The DSS is nifty little piece of kit for the price tag, I've considered getting myself one.

I really do like the fact the X41's are wireless though, I'm currently torn between a DSS or a new set of X41's......the cables on my X11's annoy me.

Most definitely better than the standard mic.

For £40 it's worth trying out the X11's first. The major issue for me with the X41's is that when I play with others who use them you get feedback from them.

Although a plus is they are wireless, and you can also plug in another audio source and lay funny sound clips over your mic, can make for some massive lols if you have good sound files. :D

Depends on your preference really. I saw a massive jump from standard mic/TV speakers to the X11's on MW2 with being able to pinpoint people moving/running near me.

Cheers. By the sounds of it it worth doing for the mic aspect alone as the official Xbox ones are shocking. I'm gonna have to go off and do some homework tonight by the looks of it. :D

Doesn't mention the x41's but has nothing good to say about either of the Turtle beach headsets he reviewed. I've also read on there elsewhere that there is a hiss with the wireless Turtle beaches as they work on the pretty overcrowded 2.4ghz frequency.

Try something that runs on 5.8ghz like the mixamp 5.8 (£110) and some current headphones, then upgrade the cans or add a mic at a later date, you can't go wrong this way.

Great some nobody panning gaming headsets, as he states it's all personal preference.

Yes I'd much rather have a pair of headphones on and a standard mic around my neck, what a wonderful set-up vs the convenience of on all in one setup.

These threads always descend into audiophiles claiming they know best and saying how rubbish all in one gaming headsets are and making silly recommendations without looking at the practical elements involved.

Played Rock Band with mine on last night, it was epic fun without waking up the neighbours :p

Hmmmm, still not sure on this...

I'll have to have a look at all the options, one thing I was considering would be to have a pair of good headphones without a mic and to use one of thos throat mics you can get... Anyone have any experience with the throat mics?
