I'm in the process of planning out the sound for our new living room and trying to workout how high to mount the surround speakers.
It is currently going to be a 7.1 setup but I may add some front Atmos upfiring in the future.
The receiver is the Marantz 6014 which has the new Dolby Atmos Height Virtualisation so I will take advantage of that for the time being.

Ear height is around 40" when slouched on the sofa in the normal viewing position so how high above that do I want the tweeters?

At or around ear level or 1-2 feet above?

Thank you!

Yeah I was thinking that too but was reading about Dolby Atmos setup for future proofing and the PDF says the following:

https://www.dolby.com/us/en/technol...tmos-home-theater-installation-guidelines.pdf

• All listener speakers should be at the same height, typically 3.9 feet (1.2 meters), which is ear level for the average seated listener

If possible, the height of the rear speakers should be the same as the height of the front speakers. If the room design makes this impractical or impossible, the rear speakers may be positioned higher than the front speakers. However, we suggest that the height of the rear speakers not be more than 1.25 times the height of the front speakers.

I'm thinking of going closer to 1 foot above than 2 just to be safe and not have to remount them in the future as and when I add height speakers.

If you have Atmos in mind, your base level speakers should be at ear height. If not, then a foot or so above ear height works well.
