Looking for something that can play a standard 2 channel mp3 out of all my 5.1 speakers.

Just using standard hdmi output to a decoder so before you say it, no I dont have any special software to use that normally comes with a sound card.

Foobar lets you do this. You can do stereo to 4 channel upmix out of the box.

If you want to upmix to 5.1 channels then you will need THIS DSP plugin.

Do I have to enable both 4 channel and matrix mixer?

I cant figure out how to use matrix mixer on its own, the sound only comes out as 2 channel with default configuration. And when I click configure, I just see a highly confusing grid of numbers.

4 channel was okay but it obviously cant use subwoofer or centre speaker, the subwoofer is the one i care about the most.

Also, If anyone has more suggestions for different softwares, keep them coming so I can pick best one :)

Just use one at a time.

Try this config:..

Your probably only going to get 2.0 PCM output anyway. Just change your receiver to 7ch Stereo or whatever music modes it has ie. PLII Music or DTS Neo 6 Music.

I think the correct way is to set windows to output 2 channel when listening to music and set back to 5.1 when playing games and movies.

And I turned on pro logic II on receiver so it comes out all speakers. Pro logic II only works on 2 channel audio with the sony receiver.

Matrix mixer don't seem to work for me, still only out two speakers with asim18's config.

Its a bit of a pita to keep having to reconfigure the speakers in the sound settings.
