please excuse me if these are very novice questions, i just cant get my head around a couple of things.

I have upgraded my 2.0 all in one soundbar to a 9.1.4 soundbar compatible with atmos and dts-x. ( samsung hw-q950t )

My blu ray player says in the specs :
DTS:X(bitstream out)/DTS decoding (7.1ch)
Dolby Atmos / Dolby True HD decoding (7.1Ch)

I dont have an AV receiver at all, i am hoping to do without one if possible.

I mainly use projectors for movies so my main interest is surround sound for 1080p and 4K blu rays with various audio specs.

So my questions are, when i feed the soundbar various very common movie audio through the blu ray player, like 2.0, 5.1, 7.1, atmos and dts-x.
Does the 9.1.4 soundbar system then convert that audio to 9.1.4 or something, like what happens when you try to play 2.0 or 5.1 audio on a 9.1.4 system ?

Without a fancy AV receiver with high specs, can i even get the full 9.1.4 to work correctly or will i be limiting it ?

Correct. It'll expand the source material to whatever your soundbar is using DSP. Then use it's own DSP for the pseudo fake 9.1.4 system - reflective sound/reverb etc.

A 9.1.4 soundbar won't be as good as native AVR , with 9 floor standers, 1 subwoofer, and 4 heights.

I'm not sure what and how many proper discrete channels come on 4K UHD discs, but if you have more speakers than the native track (say if you had Trinnov Altitude 32 and the plus 48) - with 32 or 48 speakers or whatever, the Trinnov will again use a DSP to expand the native UHD content (or stereo) to 48 channels

Thanks for the reply, that is good to know that there is a processor to deal with it.

I had visions of it being a nightmare with compatibility.

You might need to use a DSP button on your soundbar, it probably has a few modes, including "stereo" or something like that, proably on the app or supplied remote/menu system
