Thanks for the super fast link, got 8meg a second at work :D

First impressions? I've heard a lot of people think this is a very rushed and pappy release.

So it was you strealing the precious bandwidth :D

Not usre how it can be a "rushed" release as it comes out 8months after 10 came out.

Sees quite good so far on my laptop, beagle seems to use a lot of cpu time though, hopefully this will die down once it finnished doing whatever it is doing.

Cheers

It looks very cool, and with the 3d addins, it makes for a very crisp and smoothe desktop. Having a large number of issues with the keyboard settings despite setting the interface to UK standard. When the OS starts up and asks for a user ID (using root) it seems to default to something like a Cz key mapping making root something like 'pyyn' but strangely comes right when entering the root password and from there after it is fine.

Also have issues with it recoginsing anything other than a CRT monitor...

So verdict - looks nice but doesn't play well with others. Shows potential but could do better. :D

I am downloading SLED now, prompted by some of the demo videos floating about, it does look very impressive. However, is it still useable as a general desktop or is it really a specific workstation OS. For example, it is reported to have excellent hardware support but that is no good if I can't play DVDs :)

I use it as my desktop OS too and it does the job very well. You will need to add in apps to play DVD's though, as its technically not legal or something for them to include support.

Banshee player is great for using your iPod. I can't really say anything else other than try it, I'm really enjoying it but I suppose its personal taste.

I expect to do a little bit of fiddling around, adding some multimedia support is relatively easy, so that is no trouble. I am caning my broadband at the moment and I will have a bash with it tonight, along with Fedora Core 6 test release.

You use SLED 10 ?

I've just put it on my laptop. I have a problem with it not recognising the monitor on my desk and changing the resolution. I have to manually set it up properly, and then do it again when i get home and want to use the laptop screen again.

Is there a way to make it autodetect the monitor it is using ? XP did, i'd like it if SLED did the same thing.

I tried SLED last night and I must say it is a superb distro. It recognised everything on my laptop with the exception, of course, the old problem of nVidia drivers. It seems I just cannot get any drivers for a 6800 Go Ultra to work properly. I can get proper resolution but even when I installed the driver from the nVidia site, through the Installer package and manually but I just cannot get 3D support at all, which is a shame because I am mssing out on all the cool SLED 3D desktop features.

Apart from that it is very impressive indeed, it is very fast and has just about every bit of bundled software needed for a general desktop let alone an enterprise desktop. I am hoping the final release, which will be commercial I would imagine, can have the nVidia drivers bundled with it.

Does anyone know how to get a Geforce 6800 Go Ultra up and running with 3D support on ANY distro. I have tried with Ubuntu, Fedora Core 5, SuSE 9.3 and now SLED and have never got it working?

Unfortunately they won't bundle any drivers as they violate GPL if bundled with the distro apparently.

There is a way to force the enabling of the xgl effects. Open up the Desktop Effects panel in the control centre and shift-doubleclick the text next to '3D acceleration' and 'Desktop Effects'. Using a generic driver you'll probably still get more than adequate performance.

It tries to an extent, you can configure that kind of stuff by running sax2 from command line or by opening the sax2 Yast2 module.
Try setting your monitor to '-> LCD' and choose the appropriate resolution, use 60hz as thats pretty standard.

Cheers, I will try again tonight.

One last thing :D

I seem to remember recalling that for SuSE (or a form of) once you installed the drivers in runlevel3 (or no X), you then had to run sax2 to configure the card properly. I might just be imaging things, but ...
