suse or ubuntu?

I prefer Ubuntu. If I was you just try both of them since what you like is more of a personally preference :P They dont take long to install each.

I'm having a similar time trying to decide.

Unfortunately, I'm having a nightmare trying to get Dapper installed onto my ST20G5 Shuttle so at the moment Suse 10.1 is on there dual booting with XP.

Have to say, loving Suse 10.1 lots - was hoping to get hold of SLED 10 in the near future, but have been put off (by what looks like) a yearly charge to use it?!?

Very impressed by 10.1 though especially with xgl & compiz

SLED 10 is the don. You could always find a torrent for the Release Candidate which is basically a final version. I'm using 2.5 solidly on my laptop.

xubuntu = no display of desktop in a new install for me :/
latest mandriva installs just fine but buggers up when installing ati driver. :P lol *** a surprise just as bad as nvidia linux drivers :P

Very difficult choice, SLED 10 is superb but then again so is Ubuntu.

Ubuntu probably has the slight edge because of the better hardware support but the best way is to try both. :)

I thought you could download SLED10 for free but with no support or updates. Not sure where from though!

Why bother with SLED in a non-production environment? Just get the development branch, Open SuSE. It's free (as in freedom and as in beer) and it's cutting-edge.

If your new to Linux, or want an OS that works out of the box, then Ubuntu.
If you want to configure a few things then SuSE.
Imo. :)

Even ive managed to get Ubuntu working sucessfully :D

Pretty happy with it. Its certainly a learning curve, and much more satisfying than working with windows.

I agree.
Despite XP being my main OS on my main rig, i havnt touched my XP boot on my laptop in almost a month now. Ive been using Ubuntu exclusivly on it.
Ive got it running smoothly and how I want it to look, not how some company wants my computer to look. And i dont have to rely on bloated work arounds to get the fancy stuff in Ubuntu, as theres no work arounds needed, because its so open! :p
:)
