SUVs=bad bad bad

Looks like another classic SUV accident caused by driver error... If you drive it in all situations like it's a car, it will one day go wrong.

Question is, if she simply slam on the brakes, or even did nothing and let the other guy colide, would she better of?

In most cases, absolutely. Slamming the brakes on and taking the impact is in many situations better than making a snap turn and ending up barrel rolling the car.

OK - being an SUV didn't help, but I think that incident would have flipped most cars. The central reservation that she put two wheels onto was pretty rough and that's whats caused her to flip.

wow. not sure what to say. a normal car would be a lot less likely to roll, but would a normal car have as much structural integrity after such an incident?

i would personally avoid 4x4s like the plague, such compromised modes of transport. theyre slow, they dont stop like a normal car, dont change direction like a normal car (waits for some idiot to say "get a cayenne turbo then"..... yeah, with the 70 odd grand i have just laying about).

it amazed me how the news presenter almost sounded suprised that she was wearing a seat belt lol

You would be amazed at the amount of people that DON'T wear them. It boggles the mind the stupid reasons some of the idiots give.....

/Nit picking

where she was treated for a broken thumb

Possible thumbs around the steering wheel. Tut tut tut.

/Nit picking off

At least the car finally did what it was built for and went off road :p

/conspiracy
Angry ex Husband in the other car maybe?

Not necessarily, get a Forester FXT and mod it like mine or how about a Forester Sti for under 30k :p ;) :D

but for similar money you could get a straight forward impreza with more performance. is there much more space in one of those compared to an estate?

Probably could have been avoided, looks like she paniced and steered too much too quickly.

Aren't Ford Explorers notorious for being very easy to cause it to rollover? I'm sure I've had lectures on how bad they are including how poorly designed and packaged leaving horrid handling and awful body roll.

Explorers aren't bad as mid-sized SUV's go. They got a bit of a reputation a while back due to the exploding tyre fiasco though.

I maintain theres a good chance that manouver would have flipped pretty much any car. Of course, once it was rolling the high center of mavity wouldn't have helped.

In the States at least, there a number of SUVs that are plenty fast and offer handling not far off normal car standards - RAV4 V6, Saturn Vue V6, Infinity FX, Nissan Murano and Mazda CX7 all spring to mind. The Infinity is the only one that comes anywhere the Porsche in price. Of course none of these cars are going to win the Paris Dakar any time soon, but then that's not really the point.

Big full-size SUVs are going to die off because no one can afford to run them any more (unless America suddenly embraces diesel).

My old man has an Explorer, which he uses for work, to be honest I actually like it. Yes it's not a sports car with on rails handling but that's not what it's designed for.

It allows him to have the practicality of a van with the comfort of a well spec'd car. He also did well out of the tire issue, wasn't till he needed a new set a tires that the recall came out so he got a complete new set for nothing.
