Been considering getting one of these. Where I live, the roads are pretty rough and, at times, unmetalled & the Chevvy Spin we currently drive is murder on my back - though, to be fair, the suspension has held up remakably well.

As I understand it, the Jimny is a proper 4x4 with a separate chassis & a 4WD system with 3 modes & seems pretty rugged. I understand it's not so comfortable at speed & driving long distances but I never really do journeys of over 150km so probably not going to be a huge issue.

I believe they stopped importing them into the EU because of emissions some time ago but they were still being imported here up until 2025 so easy to pick up a recent second hand model.

Anyone here got any experience with the Jimny?

It's kinda what the new Defender should have been. Instead of an expensive discovery based chelsea tractor.

So quite basic and loud at speed. But it's unlikely to go wrong.

I've not owned one but I live in the sticks and many of my friends and neighbours have them - some of them also own RR's, LR's and Disco's, Grenadier's etc. Why? Small, nimble, easy to park and yet very capable. Not going to do many motorway miles in one, but that's not it purpose in life. Cheapish, very cheerful and capable.

If you have back problems I wouldn't recommend one at all. They're really fun cars and great off road but they have a very rough ride. I was going to give one to my wife, she drove it for about 5 minutes and immediately said she couldn't deal with the ride quality.

Yes it has!
No idea of budget, but there are many for sale.. Just make sure you filter for AllGrip (4WD)

I recommended one to a friend a few years ago, and other than some rear suspension modification due to towing (common issue), it's been faultless.
Nice - they must have just slipped off my radar - will look into this.

Whenever I hear the name of the car, I'm always reminded of an old neighbour of mine down in Somerset - propoer yokel - getting really excited because her hubby was buying "one of they gert Suzuki Ryvitas"

Jimny is a super capable off road car, I've seen a lot go where Landcruisers go. I wasn't aware they still made the Vitara, its hardly the same thing though if you are looking for a proper 4WD.

Depends how "off-roady" it needs to be. But I did say it might not be "off-roady" enough..

How off-road do you need? something like the Volvo XC60 will have a comfortable ride with well designed seats probably better for your back and still has some ability to handle rougher roads, though there are other SUVs like the Tiguan and Touareg which will do much better on rougher roads / light off-road without going to some form of "4x4" "off-roader" but less comfortable than the Volvo or some Audis. Some of the people living around here who don't need full on 4x4s but do need something better than the average car have the Jimny - but personally I wouldn't opt for one if my back was a concern.

Proper off road really - sometimes Waze takes us on a route & we find ourselves faced with a mountain track after having driven 50km leaving no option other than to try and take it on or turn around and retrace our steps.

Note to self: Check Waze to see if it has an option to only suggest routes on metalled surfaces like a cycle GPS
