For some reason over the last few days svchost.exe has been using up inordinate amounts of RAM, and often CPU cycles. It has always used a fair bit, but has recently become much more noticeable.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit on:

E4500 @ 2.8ghz
2GB Geil Black Dragon 6400
HD3850
320GB Seagate 7200.10 HDD
Gigabyte P35C-DS3R

Here is a screenshot of my task manager.

Hah, fair enough! I'm just pretty sure than it used to be. Think I'm going to reinstall Windows anyway...is there any chance you could see my thread below and give me some advice? Cheers

Love the Cardigans by the way!

You can probably reduce this by disabling the system services you don't need, most of the Microsoft ones run inside these svchost.exe processes.

Well say if you installed the Adobe Master Collection one day and started using all its applications frequently, Vista will start preloading the exes and dlls those programs use everytime you turn on your pc.

That's superfetch though and does not show on the process list.

Ah right, I get you! So thats what superfetch does! I'd always wondered!

Anyway, I've had a bit of a cleanout and uninstalling fest and its all a lot quicker now-thanks for the help :)

It comes under svchost on mine. Clicking 'goto service' highlights multiple ones including superfetch.

I'm pretty sure it's not, when I see it caching my stuff at bootup it's always the process ''system'' that is reading a lot off my hdd ( as in the performance screen) and not svchost.exe.
