The highligts on the swan's back look a little blown.
Do you think that darkening the highlights in photoshop would help ?
I've had similar problems with swan shots.

what do you think of the 120 - 300 f2.8 ?
I've been considering the Sigma 300 prime for my Nikon.

Yeah, the highlights are blown, but I'm not sure what I can do about it tbh.

I sue the Sigma for motorsport mostly, and its pretty good. The zoom is invaluable for shooting cars at different angles etc. In that respect it is so much better than a prime. Build quality is good, but it feels ever so slightly loose on my D70.

It works very well with a 1.4tc. Most of the distance shots on http://www.diesel-power.org.uk/album06/index.html were taken with it.

it really depends what you can afford. The Sigma is so much cheaper than the Nikon prime.But it doesnt have VR.

Like most Sigma lenses, they are only just inferior to the Nikon/canon equivalents but cost MUCH less.

Well apart from the very very very mild highlights being blown (only very very mild) it looks excellent. Love the colour of the water the most.

Not as much detail in the noggin as I'd like to see, but that's my only real quam.
The burning is mild, and tbh the kind of thing you'd see actually looking at him.

Dunno what metering you were using, but spot metering is very, very handy for swans - IMO the exposure is spot on here, but it's just a quick and reliable way of doing it in the future

Blown Highlight - don't worry about them- put too much attention to small detail could kill the overall effect.

Cheers Hood. I think the metering was in centre-weighted - I've never ever changed it from this!

Yeah, spot would make it more accurate next time. I do shoot raw though, which can sometimes help. I think I adjusted it by +0.2EV in RSE.

Also FYI, this is totally uncropped.

Were you shooting into the sun? Aside from the already mentioned highlights and detail its a nice shot. If the sun was on the swan i think it'd be perfect as his head seems a touch dark.
