Swap AMD CPU in PC at work

Hi,

I've been tasked by my non-pc-savvy boss to work out whether we can upgrade the cpu in the desktop tower that we use for most of our work. Essentially there is some software that we run on a daily basis which maxes out the processor (ie uses 100%), which causes the system to be slow and unstable etc...

Anyway, I've looked at the motherboard we have, which is an MSI-7720, and it appears that it has a cpu which is an AM3 fit (no idea if that makes sense).

After a little trawling, I think I've worked out what might fit.

But, in truth - I have no idea what I'm looking for.

Current CPU is AMD E-350, and I'm looking for something (or a few options) that might run faster. The software we use involves the operation of a camera, which is controlled remotely through the computer.

Any ideas?

Chris

Hi standarduck, Can i ask what makes you think its an AM3 Fit?

The CPU you gave as being in it "AMD E-350" is an 18 Watt BGA socket, its physically soldered to the motherboard and cannot be removed or swapped.

After a little bit of digging the model number you gave us for the motherboard returned this http://uk.msi.com/product/mb/E350DME33.html#hero-specification

"E350DM-E33" i realise is different to "MSI-7720" one is the MSI product code and the other the model number, i think, whatever is going on with those codes they seem to be one and the same.

The reason you have performance issues is as you suspected; because the CPU is not upto the task. its actually just for very basic low level computer use.

If i have found the same product, then unfortunately there isn't anything you can do about it, short of rebuilding half the unit.

Can i have the model number of that unit? that might help me clear it up a little :)

I think humbug is right - either the processor is soldered on or any upgrade that it can take will be no better.

And I'm not surprised it's slow, it really is an awful processor.

Okay - so you're telling me something I know already (that being my boss' love of cutting financial corners which results in a massive problem down the line).

I think I convinced myself that it must have some fitting socket somewhere, so I trawled google until somewhere agreed. I now realise that might not have been the most accurate way of finding my answer.

It's just a crappy PC then, right?

Unfortunately, Right.

I did, of course, mean to thank you all for your prompt responses.

Just need to work out how to break the news to the big man...

THE CONTINUING SAGA

My boss took the news in his stride, to his credit.

However, I've been forced to conduct this upgrade his way - he asked me to ring the company we originally ordered the PC from, to ask if they could suggest options.

I thought I'd run the 1 'option' I was given past you guys, as you've been extremely prompt and helpful so far.

So it was suggested that the motherboard could be swapped out for a new one. I'm keen on avoiding this issue in the future so, here's the 'model' numbers (by that, I mean the description I was given over the phone, as the guy I spoke to wasn't keen on giving me the exact model numbers. I'm guessing so that I won't just buy online.

Anyway:
replacement motherboard - MSI 8570 (and he also said HD, but I've no idea if that's part of it)

the processor he suggested that would be bundled with that was an AMD Black Edition 3.9 Ghz quad core.

These are the exact descriptions offered - any idea if these constitute a worthwhile upgrade (for circa £220)?

Chris

Don't do that.

Take the PC apart, see what parts you've got.
Tell us, and then order new parts to build a new (and faster) system.

I sympathise with your situation, being in the same situation my self.

"Boss, I can build you a PC smaller than a pack lunch box, much quicker and modern. But I absolutely can't make our PC's any faster!"

I see let me get this tower apart...we are running into a new area for me, so if someone would like to guide me through what info I can give you. I've obviously opened a case before, but there's not a great deal in here asides from the motherboard and PSU (well apart from the HDD).

Apologies, I know how irritating it is to talk basic with ill-informed people.
