Swap Ubuntu to Xubuntu

I have a HP Microserver running Ubutnu on it, with a mdadm RAID5 array on it, however I have noticed Ubuntu is a bit laggy when using it. So looking at going to xubuntu which has lower system requirements.

Can I just reinstall with that one, and then rescan for my array?

Or is there something I can do to improve the performance of Ubuntu?

Nothing else is running just a fresh install of 10.10 so I will assume its gnome.

Is that the only difference between xubuntu and ubuntu as I thought there were underlying differences?

Cool will give xfce a go tonight, hopefully that should correct the issue I am having
