Swapped Xbox360 - PS3, few first time niggles...

I’ve sold my Xbox360 Elite as I wasn’t using the Live features much, have a HDTV so wanted to get a HD player, obviously no point now so decided to get a PS3 as this gets me a fairly capable blu Ray Player, games console and media player all in one…

I got a GT5 Prologue pack, with Bluetooth remote and GTA IV and whilst the media playback is outstanding, wish MKV and OGG /OGM support was available natively I now have to ask a question..

Does this console not lock the v sync to the refresh of the screen? Running a Panasonic 42” 1080p plasma, HDMI and GT5 and a demo of Grid are screen tearing.

Never recalled my Xbox 360 performing like this with Forza 2 or Project Gotham, so a little off putting – to say the least…

Google searching, seems a few have complained about this. £300 for a console, and it seems developers are not locking the framerate, instead allowing the graphics to tear across the screen…… I’d rather a slowdown then graphical glitches…

On another note, is the dual shock controller for PS3 no longer out there, the six axis controller supplied is good, GTA IV is great with the tilt functions, a lot of fun, but I do like the rumble functions as well.

It's not been released yet, at least here anyway. Most users here have Jap. DS3's, and IIRC it's just come out in the US too. I would imagine release here is imminent because of MGS4 though, if it's not out already.

Import a Dualshock 3, we don't have it here yet *shock*, but all the other continents seem to *shock*.

Also, Screen Tearing is a common complaint on some PS3 games.

Hmm... I'll have to import the DS3 then, what's sony up to now, trying to offload the last six axis controllers to us UK owners or something? wouldn't surprise me at all, can't beleive sony thought rumble was last gen and removed it..

Wasn't it a case of license issues? I dunno, all I know is that my PS2 had the feature and I do miss it....

don't get me wrong, I think the PS3 is an excellent machine, just a few niggles that I didn't expect considering the cost, but I have to remember its still a hell of a cheap blu ray player.. ;)

Tearing is simply down to whether the developers enable vsync in their games, its the same story on the 360, both consoles are perfectly capable of using it.

As previously stated, import a dualshock 3, it is better than the sixaxis in nearly every way (its flaw being that the batteries run out faster)

I doubt MKV will ever be supported by the consoles as it is simply a container that could hold within any number of different codecs for the video and audio. In order to make the console support the filetype they would need to give it the ability to decode all of the possible compression methods. I wouldn't be shocked to have OGG support at some point, my old sony MP3 player used to support it.

Only the US and Japan/Asia have the DS3 at the moment, Europe its supposed to be out in time for MGS4, its cheaper to import anyway as i would expect it to be at least the rrp of the sixaxis. You are correct in thinking that it was a legal problem they decided to fight the case whereas Microsoft paid up earlier. They wasnt going to delay the PS3 to wait and see the outcome so a non rumble PS3 controller was released with the PS3. The "rumble is last gen" speech was just PR spin, and in hindsight was a dumb thing to say.

Didn't they also say it's not possible to have rumble and motion control in the same controller? then the company that made the take came out straight after and said it was possible?

Hmm... I recall hearing something along those lines as well.... As always, Sony make the most dumb statements to try and get away with something...

Found a DS3 for £27.99 import, so I'll get that.... As for the screen tearing, perhaps I've got a setting in the console wrong?

GT5 is only noticable when a lot of cars and scenary are on screen, its not too bad, but Grid Demo was awful incar... Awful game anyhow, not a purchase I'll be making....

MGS4 however, yep that's one I'm looking forward to.... Buying a PS3 might pay off yet..... :p

Thanks for all your help so far....

Exactly thats why i said it was a dumb thing to say lol, it was also mentioned that the rumble in the wiimote worked fine lol. Some people take what these PR guys say at face value i dont, specially when we all knew they was going through a court battle about rumble at the same time lol.

I found a forum thread on codemasters website, where a developer of the game has said that they will be releasing a patch for GriD to try and fix some of the issues noticed in the demo version of the PS3 version..

A few complaints about screen tearing, and poor visuals when compared to Xbox360...

Phew, glad its not me or my TV or something... The developer said they sync every frame, however this can't be totally true, if they did, it wouldn't tear like it is when I played the demo....

GTA IV isn't tearing, but then its not a hi def game as such, as its running below 720p, I also read that today during my google searches in regards to PS3..

Honestly, if I was a hardcore gamer, and didn't care about media or playback of blu ray... I'd have kept the Xbox360, the PS3 does seem to have a few niggles...

Thankfully not a huge games player, so still pleased I swapped.....
