Swapping from quad to dual?

Is it me or is there a trend of ppl moving back from quads to dual cores? Why is this? Have I missed something?

I have done it myself. A quad was just no use to me as this rig is for gaming and bugger all games (none of mine) make use of quads. It was sitting there clocked to 3.8Ghz with at least two cores, sometimes even three cores doing nothing. Just chucking out shedloads of heat and sucking up loads of power. It was a waste of time for me.

That's what I thought. Was thinking of buying a Q6600 as they're quite cheap now and I feel the need for an upgrade (see current spec in sig) but have seen a lot of recommedations for the E8500 for the gamer. Are the 8500's good clockers on air?

Yeah I've heard that (like the Nissan GTR's engine) they're not all the same some o/c more than others. Pot luck I guess. Also I take it that the E8500 is currently the top dual core on offer?

I went from a q6600 to e8500 because i knew i could clock it more and i would rather have the extra cpu speed than extra cores... need to stop buying cpu's!, thats 6 different ones from the c2duo and quad alone now... and i wouldn't mind getting an e8600 as well.

Yea me too, im on my 6th as well...

Quads are a waste of time really for most people, most games dont make use of them thats just a fact, they create far more heat and use loads more power as well as been generally a pain to overclock, i bought a q6600 which caused me nothing but hasstle and the q9450 wasnt any different!

I will however say that without a dought quads make windows much more snappier

i cant believe this...

and you people tell others to get a dual which is slower for other things and the same with games.... quads are not more expensive than duals so why not go for the quad... comes in very handy every day.

mabye you got enough money to mess about with it all but you tell others to buy the dual core over equal price quad and eventually they will complain that they need quad...

i can picture you guys have nothing installed exept games lol,

These are most likely the same people who believe it or not would take part in 20+ page arguments and slagging sessions about people who chose to buy dual core CPU's last year.

I would pay as little attention to them now as people should have done then.

I get a lot more performance out of my 8400 than I did out of the q6600, I'm not pro dual though. When the time comes that I would get more from a quad I'll switch.

Please forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong, however, pretty much everything is multi-threaded these days, right? I find it hard to believe games run only two threads, and if they're running more, each core can take care of different threads?

It's down to the game's programmers to make it utilise more than 1 core of a CPU. Mostly all games are able to use 2 core's though, however only a handful can utilise 4 cores, which are:

Supreme Commander
Lost Planet
Crysis
BioShock
S.T.A.L.K.E.R
Unreal Tournament 3
C&C3: Tiberium Wars

Might be a couple more, but that's all I know of. Also even from those games, there's only a couple of them that properly benefit from Quad Cores (SC and Crysis).

FSX as well.

While a large and increasing number of games are multithreaded so dual and quad cores run them faster, many are still single threaded or run quicker on a higher clocked dual over a slower clocked quad.
When you move over to desktop applications, the situation is more extreme where there is only a small number of usuable, well multithreaded applications.

Real men use quads :D

Seriously though, A TT is able to handle a g0 quad at 3.2 to 3.9 with no problems at 3/4 fan speed. Enable speedstep and find a reasonable balance between vcore and clock speed and they are more than manageable without w/c or high end air.

I do remember some time back a user on here bought a QX6(8?)00 and was very proud that his machine was able to burn a dvd, browse the internet, download stuff AND chat to people on msn all at the same time. :D:D
