A colleague of mine is swapping from Bulldog to Plus.net and during the registration process he's been asked for his MAC address.

I assume that this is the MAC address of the USB modem he was provided at the ntime of initial signup, but why would an ISP need this? What exactly do they do with it?

Yeah, it's a code that Bulldog need to give you.
Then again, moving from Bulldog to Plusnet's a bit like out of the frying pan into the fire.

tolien; why would that be?

Bulldog might not be great, but Plusnet's worse still.
Taking a look here would be a start. Expect undeclared caps, T&Cs that change daily, clueless support, and that's assuming you can get connected in the first place :p
