Swapping NAS drives from one NAS to another

Hey guys,

So I have a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+, that I bought 2nd hand from a friend last year. It came with 4x 2TB drives already in. It's been great so far. I even changed the fan inside cos the normal was just too noisy.

I want to get this NAS box, but I just want to know how easy it is to swap the drives from the NV+ to the 104. Or would I have to somehow find a way to copy my data elsewhere, format the drives before moving to the new NAS?

Given that they are both made by Netgear, I would have thought (or hoped) that it was a case of just swapping them over.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! :)

You really want to have a backup in place. Swapping drives like this will always carry some risk.

In fact you should have a backup anyway (assuming you care about the data).

Possibly suggest looking at better NAS choices while you're at it. Netgear don't have an amazing history in the market compared to Synology for example or going self build.

Could probably pick up a microserver for around the same price or less (I think). Then could run some vm's and have a mediaserver etc.

To be fair, Netgear will have a lot more expertise in the market compared to "self build" which is only ever as good as what a person and a few friends on the internet can produce.
I'm pretty sure the people at Netgear will know what it is their doing. Sure, compare them to other NAS manufacturers. But "self-build" is just a different option - that is far more complex and to a more novice person, probably not the way to go.

Thanks for the input guys. I ended up going for the 2 bay Netgear ReadyNAS 102 as it was on offer for £80 from the Rainforest, yesterday. I am aware of Synology, but going to stick with what I already have and know and I can't fault the Netgear as my friend had it for years before I bought it from him and hasn't let me down. I will be purchasing 2x 4TB drives for it or maybe 6TB drives. Either way, got the NAS and the drives will be bought at a later date. :)
