I'm going to be swapping out my old budget mobo with an Asus P5q Deluxe in the week. My first time fitting a new mobo. I've done two from-scratch builds before, but would like to know if there is anything different to think about when simply swapping the boards?

Should I re-install W7?
Will Windows boot with no mobo drivers installed?

To be fitted:
Q8300
2x 1.5GB DDR2 800
5770
650W OCZ
320GB HDD
DVD RW
Stock CPU cooler
Two budget case fans

I strongly suggest you reinstall windows 7.

If you clear out all the motherboard drivers it can work, but it will likely work better with a fresh install on fresh hardware.

I put my old hard disk from a P5K motherboard into a new build with a P7P55D motherboard and Windows 7 detected nearly everything fine. Once the other drivers were installed the machine worked really well with no performance issues.

Both Intel chipsets though.

I didn't have your luck, Ravenger! BOOTMGR was busted when trying to boot with the new mobo. Had to re-install. I'm foolishly optimistic and so didn't create a re-install disc before taking out the old mobo, so had to put it back in, boot and make one. It took... a while.

And about 5 cups of tea.

I did this on Monday, albeit with AMD. Went from 790FX based ASUS board to an 890FX based ASUS board. Windows 7 booted up ok in low res, low colours mode. Proceeded to sort all the devices and drives out, I just provided ones for LAN and USB3. Rebooted and all was back as it was. To say I was impressed is an understatement!

When i went from S775 to my current computer, in sig. I did'nt bother re-installing, though what the heck lets just install the new stuff and see what happens.

It booted up, sorted itself out after a few reboots, and was happy enough, i did have to re-activate Win 7 though, some friends hav'nt needed to others have, and in all honesty was a quick phonecall to the automated MS number and job done.
