Swapping platters between drives

If I wanted some data from a hard drive that had terminal head failure, how easy is it so swap them into another working drive? I'd guess it has to be an identical drive, right?
Does anyone have any experience of doing this?

Scratch that, I've done some more research and it seems like it's nigh on impossible.
