Swapping tyres onto new alloys?

My rather tidy XJS is let down at the moment by some pretty scabby lattice alloys (with good tyres) and I have been meaning to replace them since I got the car.

I am clueless when it comes to this sort of thing, I have seen some good lattice alloys on ebay with no tyres. So what I would like to know is, is it possible to get a tyre place to swap your old tyres onto different alloys? Does it cost a lot?

negotiate, i'd be surprised if they didn't come down on that price.

Yeah will give it ago.

Right now I'm more concerned about getting the engine back in one piece however :p Will be doing wheels/suspension on Tuesday me thinks! (All going well with the engine that is!)

I changed my mind and got 4 starfish alloys with new tyres, should I just fit them myself and forget about it, or should I take the car to a tyre place to get the wheels balanced? Does it make a humungous amount of difference? (I'm thinking about that "bodicea wheel spikes" scene from Top Gear) If I put the new wheels on myself and turn up asking for a wheel balance will they be insulted?

Going to a local tyre place to get it done I paid about 10-15 per wheel.

Then when I swapped them back (decided to sell the ones I'd put on a few months later) I got my usual garage to do it and they did it for free :)
