Sweet spot build?

I'm mulling over a new build. I built my current machine around the end of 2010 iirc and while it does most of the things I require of it, I've just got that itch to start again.

So slightly random question in what machine would I come up with if I cherry picked all the "sweet-spot" price vs performance components? As a starter CPU wise the Ryzen 1700 looks about the best bang for buck, (or is it?) but what else jumps out as the pick of the bunch component wise. For now being able to use my current monitor (1920X1080)with everything at high quality for gaming would be sufficient unless there are some cheap monitors to be had.

So first piece of the jigsaw

Cheers for the quick response. I'm toying with starting again from scratch and either selling my current machine on, or having a little go at using it as a HTPC. I've not really decided as yet I'm just thinking about it thus far.

Must admit I've not looked at memory prices in quite some time and they certainly are a little crazy at the moment. Is there any particular reason or as they say when they put the prices up "it's all due to market forces";):)

What'd the current thinking on ram size? Is 8Gig enough or is 16Gig becoming the norm?

How do you get the "My basket" thingy to work?

Current build

Gigabyte P55-USB3 (1156)
I5-760 (2.8)
8Gig XMS
HD 6850
1TB F3
250Gig Samsung SSD (Non Pro)
Corsair 850W

Copy the BBCode from basket screen

you'll see a massive increase in performance with either ryzen or coffeelake even with keeping your current GPU :D , after 3rd gen- large improvements stopped until now with adding 2 extra cores as well as high clock speeds. 2nd gen was a good jump over your current first gen

To be truthful I wasn't sure which path to take towards a little bit more performance and longevity. My first thought was to simply buy a better GPU, but my mother board won't even do 6Gb/s on the sata bus, it's limited to 3Gb/s (early board) so that's one potential bottleneck anyway So I think the best way forwards might well be new CPU/Motherboard/memory and soldier on with me current HD6850 and look to swap that next year.

Following 20mins browsing, I thought this combo might do the trick but am open to suggestions.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £515.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

3200/3000hz is the sweet spot for ryzen, basically in the simplest forms , the cores talk to each other at the speed of the system ram - though some boards can go over 3200- returns in gaming arent shown above 3200

Cheers that's an interesting little nugget of information. Make sense when you think about it, not that I'm that bright or even research these things that well. 350 chipset looks like it would be more than enough for my needs. Hopefully OCUK will stick some deals on around the Xmas break.
