Thought I'd get a thread going for 2015's Swimathon. It's currently half price to sign up which equates to £6 for an adult. It's in mid-April, 17th-19th. I'd be interested to hear who's doing it and your previous Swimathon experiences/times.

I've previously done 3 Swimathons. I did my first as part of a team when I was about 12. My other two Swimathons, both 5km, I swam in my mid-teens. First one was a time of about 1h50m (about 14y/o) and the last just under 1h30m (about 16y/o). I swam 3-5 times a week between the ages of 5 and 18. When I went to uni unfortunately I stopped swimming and haven't got back in to it since. I'm now 24. :(

Hoping to raise a fair amount for Marie Curie and get back in to swimming and keep at it indefinitely! It will be interesting to see how I do compared with my times from some 8 years ago. I'm not going to be able to do tumble turns due to a lumbar spine problem so I'm thinking this will impact somewhat on my time. I'm going to start swimming again on the 26th of this month and aim to go at least twice a week doing about an hour or so a time building up distances once I've regained some fitness. Has anyone got/used a Garmin Swim before? I only ever swim seriously in a pool so seems suitable but wouldn't mind a recommendation before buying. I tend to lose count of lengths easily so it would be a help in tracking my (presumed) progress. Any other kit worth checking out? I mean to continue after the Swimathon so expect to get a lot of use out of them. I'd like to progress to 10km eventually - I'm never going to run a marathon so a roughly equivalent swim would be an achievement. I remember when I did my second one they offered a 10km Swimathon, a bit gutted they don't do it anymore for me to aim towards next year.

Very much considering this, keep thinking about it but I really should this year.

Just looking at the registration and am confused by the speed picking part, I have no idea how to gauge my speed and the website doesn't appear to offer any indication of what is considered slow, medium slow, medium fast or fast. I average 122 s/100m according to my swimtag but generally that isn't over 5km. I don't think doing 5km will be an issue so long as I make sure to keep my fluids up though as I can happily do 3km.

No idea about training aids, my local pool has the swimtag system which is available to members for free: www.swimtag.net makes life easy to keep track of how you are doing and the fact that I don't have to do anything other than pick up a tag when I get there is excellent :)

Go for it! I have been thinking about it for a couple of years and never gone ahead. This year I have signed up to force myself. I've also donated £20 along with my sign up to ensure my commitment and now I've bought this watch. I went for medium fast hoping that I'll be the same speed as last time at 1h28m (~105s/100m if my maths is correct). I think it all depends on your local pool. I remember with my last ones there weren't many entrants and I was the fastest (rural north Wales). However, I'm sure if I was in a big city with many swimming clubs I'd find I was nowhere near the fastest.

Never heard of that swimtag system, it sounds great. Just checked and there's not one in Wales. I'd have to drive 2 hours to the nearest pool with one! :(

Well, I did this yesterday before work, was having serious cramping issues by the end and ran out of time to make 5k before I had to go to work. However I do feel that I'll be able to do the full distance by the time april comes around barring any injuries :)

One of the other pools I am allowed to use on my membership does a coached session once a week which I keep meaning to get along to as I've pretty much plateaued in regards to speed but I am very aware that this is mainly down to my technique which needs some serious work, still I don't think I'm doing too badly for a fat old bloke :D
