Swipe away notifications?

Evening,

Is there a way to get rid of a notification without clicking it? I find myself having to wait for the notification to disappear to click something beneath it.

You mean ones from say BBC sport for example? If so swipe up from the notification.

E:Just tried that and it doesn't work if the screen is locked, you still have to swipe left and press clear.

Sorry, I forgot to say this is for notifications like messages in OS X.
