Does anybody know where within the 16 digit number on a switch card the account number is contained? A quick search of the net showed up nothing.

mine used to when it was switch/maestro.(with hsbc)

ive now got a visa debit which has a different number but the account number is also printed on it.

i believe is about the 5th or 6th number in generally.

If its HSBC card i get the same problem, ive been told the account number is the last 8 digits of the long number.

My HSBC cards (got a new joint account recently too) are both the last 8 digits.

You don't get an account number in a 16 digit card number.

edit - I'm a fool, you said in a 16 digit card number - so yes, YOU ARE RIGHT! ;) I should read threads before replying.

HSBC do - I know you work in banking, but my HSBC maestro cards start with 675940 XXXX YYYYYYYY where X is my sort code and Y is account number. It makes online purchasing a breeze as I never need to get my card out. As far as I am ware, however, no other banks seem to do this. Natwest certainly didn't when I had accounts with them.

I used to work for a bank, specifically debit cards ;). Natwest used to do 19 digit PANs with 6759 followed by sort code, account number and a check digit, but they were phased out in 03/04.

HSBC cards do indeed show the sort code and account number in the PAN (large number across the middle) in the format: 675940 xxxxNNNNNNNN where 40 xxxx is the sort code and NNNNNNNN is the account number. This is the old Maestro cards, HSBC now issue Visa Debit with the sort code and account number listed separately on the card :)
