Hi,

Having been just about to order my new stuff, I find myself reading about PCI-Express 2.0! Was going to get an Abit IP35 Pro, but would I be better off going for an X38 board for the PCIE2.0 functionality, as I'm holding fire on GFX cards for a couple of weeks while we wait for these new Nvidia cards? Or does 2.0 not make that much of a difference?

I'm buying an OEM copy of Vista so I don't want to have to get another copy if motherboards take a giant leap forward with 2.0, and I have to get a new one!

Cheers

new nivida cards are out today, as far as i am aware 2.0 only allows more power to the gpu, and any 1.0 card can use a 2.0 slot and vice versa, so i dont think its a huge step up.
P35's seem stabler overclockers as well and overall cheaper :D so i would stick to the abit. it can take the next batch of CPU's from intel as well so thats good.

your aware of the boot issue right?

good to see another Chelmsford'ite here :)

To be honest, I think you can always be waiting. The 8800GTS and GTX really do out perform any game that's out there at the moment. My theory is upgrade for now, not what's possible coming out tomorrow. What I'm trying to say is that what ever you buy now, will still be able to play the top games in 18 months or so. II've just upgraded from a 4400+ (939) and although it's outof date and has much less potential than a C2D, it was still able to run BioShock (with the help of a GTX) at 1920x1200 at the highest settings. For a CPU that is over two years old, that's some going.

I'd say go for the P35 and GTS/GTX :)

Hehe, there's quite a few of us lot now it seems!

Thanks guys, what you say makes perfect sense, it's been a couple of years since I last built a system so think I must just be getting a bit excited! ;) Although I have read somewhere that PCI-E2.0 allows more bandwidth as well as more power? Guess this isn't as major as it sounds then?

Hobgoblin, not aware of any boot issue, do you mean for the IP35 Pro?

Cheers

the 8800GT is due out, its considerably faster and cheaper than the GTS. It would be silly and idiotic to buy a GTS at this stage. Get a GT!

Hi Andeh,

Yeah as mentioned I am going to wait a couple of weeks, think I read somewhere that there is a new faster GTS coming out in a couple of weeks too, so i will stick with my 7900GTX for 2/3 weeks and see what happens. I assumed that's what Admiral Huddy was getting at too - having seen a couple of threads on the 8800GT already, seems like it's going to be pretty nifty!
