Switch ISP DSL > Fibre

I currently have a Unlimited 16MB ADSL line with BT land land (BT line rental) + Xilo Pro 16MB package, however i am finding it just too slow these days as i work from home so upload a lot of data and my ADSL is crawling.. so looking to switch to Fibre.

I notice Sky have Line Rental + Fibre 40MB for £35 a month which is only £5 more than i am paying for my 2 separate products right now. Is Sky ok for reliability? Is there anywhere else i might get it cheaper?

You can get Unlimited 80/20 FTTC from Plusnet for about the same amount. You can also make a useful saving by paying the line rental annually in advance.

Plusnet are also less hassle if you want to use a third-party router.

Don't plusnet do a lot of shaping and throttling at times and block certain content?

Been with them on 80/20 connection for a good few months now, never noticed any issues with torrents.

Or maybe they do buy I don't notice because its massivley faster than ADSL!
My useage is around 400GB a month

Plusnet are quite open about their traffic management policy. You can read about it here.

It's never had any detrimental impact as far as I've been able to notice.

Going to get fibre compatible router. Anyone got a Linksys EA6700 802.11ac? Seems to come up highly in reviews and i've always trusted linksys.

Silly question but what router do i actually want.. Cant find any specifically for FTTC connections? Or is that not what i need?

Linksys EA6700 is fine.

Did you go through quidco? The cashback knocks a good chunk out of the cost of the contract price.

I think plusnet are great, i had some install issues, bt engineer not turning up on the right date. as theres 2 parties involved, your isp, and a Bt engineer has to attend your property to 'install' a modem and switch you on at your nearest junction box thingy.

Think I was just unlucky though.. Once its working it's great, ive got far more bandwidth than i know what to do with!

You need a VDSL integrated router to be able to cut out the modem, or you'll need to plug your router into their supplied modem.

Yup you have 2 units, a router from plusnet and a modem that comes from bt openreach.

I belive you can buy a router modem combo, but personally I can't be bothered with tje hassle .
