Hi all

My old network was fed from a 24 port HP Procurve 1800-24G web managed switch. The HP Procurves came well recommended when I picked it up 4 years ago.

I am in the process of installing a new network in a new house and wish to change my switch to a brand new 48 port (or 2x 24 port) and give my existing switch to a friend.

Given familiarity of my exisiting HP Procurve, my instinct is to buy a brand new HP 1810-48G but... I've noticed something.

HP's product site linked below indicates there is a Mk2 version of the 24 port switch with one of the key new features being a reduction in power consumption.

A comparison of power consumption below

1810-48G - 60W
1810-24G v2 - 22W thus two of these would be 44W and more efficient than a 48 port item.

So I guess my questions are as follows

1) Are the HP Procurves still well regarded or are there better options out there for comparible prices?
2) If HP Procurves are the way to go, any flaw in my logic of going for 2x 24 ports instead of 1x 48 port?

To clarify, I wish for the switch to be web managed and have jumbo frame support, VLAN support and general tweaking options for future learning etc.

Thanks for your time,

Mike

One benefit of the 1810-24G v2 is that they're completely silent (no fans).

Using two switches rather than one would limit your bandwidth between machines connected to different switches.
