Hi
Every now and then one of my kids torrents. After that my network switch slows down the network. Restating it solves the problem. Restarting the router or the AP does not solve the problem it is the switch. Also, when using the old unmanaged switch this doesn’t happen only with the managed switch the problem occurs
Can someone please help me troubleshoot the issue? Is there something I can do on the switch to avoid this?

What make\model is the switch in question?

As KIA said - Torrents tend to cycle a lot of connections and some of these will perpetually, or for long periods, get stuck in an active state for various reasons on many common router and managed switch OSes eventually ties up a lot of resources until the device is restarted. Limiting the max connections in the client will only mitigate it a bit and/or some switches and routers allow you to increase the max connections/tracking table but that again only helps a bit and doesn't solve the underlying issue.

If you have CLI access to the switch/router you can run a script to force close those connections although it doesn't always take without a restart.

Hold up a sec.
Which torrent client is being used?

If qBittorent then, tools > options > connection > peer connection protocol > set to tcp

I think it is set to utp and tcp by default and it floods your network.
