Switch to an external screen macbook air?

Real quick one

I have plugged in a VGA external screen to fix a Macbook Air, plugged in via and adapter but not getting a signal?

On most laptops it's "fn" and "F7" say??

Go into system preferences and choose the 'Displays' option, try the 'Detect Displays' option if it does not show up there.
