Switch Wired Controller Woes

Hi guys, happy new year!

We got the kids (6 & 4) a Switch OLED for Christmas with a couple of junior sized official Nintendo licenced Horipad Mini USB wired controllers for smaller hands.

Whilst they both work eventually, they're a faff to actually get working to begin with having turned on the Switch. The first one usually registers with an L&R press, but I keep having to unplug and replug the second controller for it to be recognised. I've taken to leaving the second controller unplugged until it's needed (e.g. selecting 2 player in Mario Kart) then plugging it in when it says it needs to see two controllers to play 2 player, but if I'm not around to do this the kids struggle to get it working on their own. It's not controller specific as the same thing happens regardless of which of the two I have plugged in first - and they both work fine once they're recognised.

In my day of N64 gaming (showing my age) you just had controllers plugged in and off you went! Any ideas?

Are teh USB cables seated well into the controllers?

The wired controllers I have the pad connectors are very loose, I imagine to stop any damage from cable pulls

They're hard-wired into the controllers, both definitely seated properly at the other (console) end though. It's as if it doesn't register more than one at all if they're both plugged in when the console is turned on.
