I'm looking for an 100Mbps switch with a 1Gbps uplink port but haven't been able to find one for a reasonable price. I wouldn't be spending more than £50 and cheaper is better. Does anyone know of any?

for that price you could possibly get a 1gb switch, and just use one of it's normal ports for the uplink? (IIRC it should be an issue mixing the 100mbit local network with the 1gb uplink).

Well preferably 8 or more.

Yea Werewolf, I've got an 8-port gigabit switch that has all my gear linked up to it but for LAN parties, I want a gigabit link to my server (upstairs) and everyone else on 100Mbps so that they don't strangle the connection for everyone else.

You're not going to bottle neck a 1gbit network with "LAN party" traffic, if you are file sharing then thats another matter and I would just make them set their NIC's to 100mbit.

Or... uplink a 100mbit switch to the 1gbit switch and plug everyone in to the 100mb.

The advantage of getting another gigabit switch is that if all the LAN party computers are connected to this switch and want to transfer large files between each other, then that will be fast, and not affect computers connected to the other switch.

As you mention, if these LAN party computers are transferring large amounts of data to/from your server then that gigabit connection could become saturated, assuming your file server is able to handle that I/O transfer rate.

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to achieve, but a good place to start looking for switches would be on a well known auction site.
