I was debating whether to put this in Networks or here, but I assumed I'd find more people likely to know the answer in here:

I'm looking to re-comission a fiber link to an external building - which means I need a switch with SFP+ fiber connectivity.

I've found a Cisco 3750 which is what the rest of the building uses at £4k+vat, and an equivalent Dell 24 port option for £3k+vat, but these are simply too expensive for the two users that actually require connectivity over there.

Can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative?

Does it need to be Layer 3?

If not a cheap-o netgear with SFP slot it shouldn't cost anymore than £500.

Netgear GS724TS L2 + a Netgear GBIC

can't you pick up cheap linksys switches with SFP? I think we had one once upon a time, but can't remember

a switch with SFP+ fiber connectivity.

Do you need 10Gbit connectivity? Or will standard SFP 1Gbit be more suitable? If you need SFP+ you will need to 3750x with the C3KX-NM-10G= and SFP-10G-SR= which will add a substantial amount to the cost of the switch.

Tight budget?

Either

2 x GS716T - around £125+VAT each
2 x AGM731F SFP - around £140+VAT each

or

2 x Allied Telesis Media Convertors eg AT-MC1004 (GB Ethernet to GB Fibre SX) - around £175+VAT each and then use whatever switches you already have or want to buy.

I've already found the AT-MC1004 and that is what I'll be going with I think. Given the low volume of users at the other end, I think this is by far the most cost effective solution.

Does it need to be a switch?

Couple of media converters and use a copper port on an existing switch? Is that viable?

EDIT: Oops, nevermind, already been suggested!
