Switching between monitor sound & headphones

Need a little advice here.

I need to switch between speakers and headphones. Until now I did this via a little plantronics switch box. I'm using a Creative X-Fi and just fed the output to the switch box and flicked it across manually.

I've now installed a monitor with built-in sound. I've thus set my default sound output device to the HDMI audio and it comes ouit via the monitor fine. What I can't figure out is how I can switch to the speakers when necessary.

I've tried setting the headphone auto-detect stuff in the Creative control panel but to no avail. If I plug in headphones, either to the rear output on the car or to the front panel output connected to the card internally, nothing happens.

Is what I'm trying to do even possible? If so, what am I missing?

TIA :)

You need to set the default device in the Windows sound options, so either HDMI or X-Fi, depending on which you want to use. While auto detect works with onboard audio, so sound automatically switches once headphones are plugged in, it never seems to work with sound cards. I don't know why that has never been implemented properly like it has with Realtek for example.

The Xonar DG/DGX has auto detect for the front audio, but that only works to switch from rear sockets to the front. It doesn't work to switch the sound card to default device from another audio device connected to the system.

I think someone wrote some kind of shortcut app so it can be done from the desktop, for the people who find going to the Windows sound options to do it, too much of a chore. Quite bizarre really, that these people can get out of bed, dress themselves and do all the things they do all day, yet find going to the Windows sound options to swap between default audio devices, too much of an effort. :p

TBH if I can't get it working automatically then I'll just leave the headphones plugged into the sound card and switch the playback device between that and the HDMI to switch when needed - it's only a few clicks.
