Seriously considering switching my broadband from tiscali to Sky since it is a faster connection for a better price (16Mb for £10 as opposed to 1Mb for £15 :p )

Never done this before and I understand it is different that for dialup so how would I go about doing this with minimal loss of service?

Get MAC key from Tiscali (fun), give MAC key to Sky.
Eventually your service breaks, and some time later you find that changing your username to the one Sky give you (or more to the point, connecting Sky's router) leaves you with a working service. Job done.

wouldnt my old ISP keep billing me though for the service since I haven't cancelled it myself. Or will I need to cancel there and then to get the MAC key

Not unless you're happy giving them your bank details and the ability to cease your phone line.

The principle is sound - you get a code from your old ISP, you give the code to your new ISP. Some time later you've moved. Hardly challenging stuff.

will be getting my MAC tomorrow. cancellation line is closed for the night.
Could be having problems though if their FAQ is up to date
