Hello all

I've just seen an i5 2500k for £112 new on *scam site* and was thinking of upgrading from my 955 to it.

My question is would it be worth the upgrade? I'd be looking to spend around £250 replacing the cpu+motherboard, plus I'd sell my cpu+mobo in ebay to get some cash back, think I could get around £150 for my very good conditioned 955+ gigabyte fx UD5 so the cost of the upgrade goes down a bit.

Can my current windows 7 boot up with the new hardware or would I have to reinstall?

Also should I upgrade or wait? I only game and word process/internet.

Cheers.

Also can someone recommend a good motherboard for this? I currently am using crossfire and want to overclock the cpu as much as possible, currently have the antec 620 so would like a nice board but not crazy expensive. £140-180 I'd say.

Nevermind, I think the website is a scam.... phew almost bought it :o

If its for gaming I'd say keep your 955. if your willing to upgrade wait for Ivy bridge this will be a big step up from the 955.

If you ever do that sort of upgrade the chances are that it wouldn't boot from your existing Windows installation.

A fresh installation of Windows is recommended anyway.

you'd be surprised, Windows more than likely would boot, but 99% sure it would have to be re-activated. changed from Intel to AMD in the past and did so without fresh install, was loads of rubbish left over on disk mind, such as Intel interface drivers and the likes, so a fresh install would still be recommended! ;)
