My motherboard has died so i am thinking that it might be time to switch to an Athlon 64 set-up. I currently have

Athlon 1700 xp @2000
2x256 3200 DDR Ram
Hercules 9800 Pro gfx
500W Jeantech ATX Psu
GlobalWin Case
60Gb seagate barracuda

Am i correct in thinking that if i went down the socket754/939 motherboard route then i will have to replace pretty much everything bar the memory (probably look to go to 1GB) and the hard drive?
Hopefully i could sell my older bits and pieces to fund the upgrade, not sure how much thats all worth though.
Is there a real disavantage to going Sempron (754)?

All you would need to change is your mobo/cpu/heatsink combo for a 754/939 set up ,no need to change your HDD, memory ,PSU or graphics card (go for an AGP mobo & not PCI e) . Theres no real disadvantage in going sempron other than cache & (i think) . Try a price check thread in the MM to see how much you're stuffs worth :)

Oo_Scotty_oO is correct about what you need to change although moving to A64 does offer the chance to upgrade parts like going for 1gb Ram etc.

What sort of a budget do you have? You may be able to get a more decent system than you think for it.

Been reading up on that Asrock board and it does look to be the ideal solution for my situation, allows me to use my gfx card as its still got a few miles in it yet and it seems like a good board in itsself

I suppose it might be wise to upadate the PSU as that might have caused the original board to blow?

you could always test the psu by running occt as it will give you a read out on the rails and any big movments in them would suggest to get rid of the psu, otherwise could be fine.
